Abstract

The aim of the present research is to elucidate the model of factors influencing the demand for sports tourism in Iraq. This study employs an applied qualitative research approach, utilizing grounded theory methodology as proposed by Glaser. The statistical population consists of professors and experts in sports management, tourism, and sports tourism, as well as managers of travel agencies. A purposive and snowball sampling method was used to select participants from this community. Data collection involved semi-structured interviews with 15 specialists until theoretical saturation was reached. The validity of the research was confirmed by relevant experts, and reliability was determined to be 74% through inter-coder agreement. The findings of the study indicated that economic dynamics, tourism management, sporting events, social and cultural transformations, challenges and opportunities in tourism, economic, managerial, political, social, and cultural functions, information technology, and environmental factors are the 11 key categories affecting the demand for sports tourism in Iraq. In this regard, paying attention to the factors influencing the demand for sports tourism in Iraq and effectively managing these factors can enhance the number of sports tourists and promote the sustainable development of this industry in the country. By implementing these strategies, Iraq can not only contribute to its economic and social growth but also emerge as a model for sustainable sports tourism development in the region.
